Before you copy that image from Google....

Use your own photos and text in Trade Me listings to avoid breaching copyright.

11 December 2024

Using your own photos and text for your listings keeps you from breaking copyright laws.

If you use a picture from Google without permission, you could be breaking copyright.

Big companies like Apple, Nike, and Samsung pay to have their photos made. They own the copyright and control how the photos are used.

If you breach copyright on Trade Me

We work with about 800 companies and copyright owners every day to protect their copyrights.

If a copyright owner contacts us about your use of their photos, and we agree with them, we'll remove the image from your listing, or sometimes remove the whole listing.

Respecting copyright

The easiest way to avoid copyright problems on Trade Me is to use your own pictures and write your own descriptions. Clear, accurate photos and descriptions help buyers know what to expect, which helps avoid disagreements.

If you’re unsure about whether you can use an image or text, refer to the Intellectual Property Office’s information on copyright and guidance from Copyright Licensing New Zealand.

If you think your copyright is being infringed on Trade Me, get in touch. Our IP Liaison programme can help.
